  COURSE OUTLINES:

Since the birth of the Internet, Web site design has traditionally been the preserve of professionals and third-level graduates. Without highly specialised skills and considerable funding, it has been difficult for small organisations and individuals to create a Web presence. Until now!
  WHAT IS IT:

Developed by the ECDL Foundation, ECDL / ICDL WebStarter is a certification that offers Candidates the opportunity to acquire the core skills required to design, create and maintain a Web site, without having to commit to the time and expense of a professional-level Web design programme.
  WHO IS IT FOR:

ECDL / ICDL WebStarter, an ideal certification for:

  • Small businesses that need a presence on the Web but do not have the resources to finance a large scale site.
  • Community groups who may need to communicate with their members while keeping costs as low as possible.
  • Second-level students who wish to share information and communicate with each other.
  • Individuals who wish to create personal Web sites, e.g. to stay in touch with friends and family or to pursue hobbies.

  COURSE OBJECTIVES:

ECDL / ICDL Webstarter will ensure that a Candidate:

    • Understands key Web publishing concepts.
    • Has the core skill necessary to create a Web site.
    • Understands some of the basic principles of HTML.
    • Can perform simple HTML coding.
    • Can use a Web editor to create Web pages, create forms & tables, use frames & format    text.
    • Can save and work with images on a Web site.
    • Can publish the site on the World Wide Web (WWW).
    • Has a good appreciation of security issues and laws relating to Web publishing.

The ECDL / ICDL WebStarter certification requires approximately 20-30 hours of tuition followed by the successful completion of a simple 45-minute Test.

Web Concepts
The Candidate will be able to:

  • Define and understand key terms like WWW, browser, web server, URL, protocol and hyperlink.
  • Identify the steps involved in uploading Web pages.
  • Identify the advantages of Web publishing.

HTML
The Candidate will be able to:

  • Define and understand the fundamentals of HTML.
  • Build a simple page.
  • Use the common mark-up tags of HTML.
  • Add titles, set font styles and text colours.

HTML Editor
The Candidate will be able to:

  • Create, duplicate and save files.
  • Understand and apply text inputting and formatting.
  • Understand and apply paragraph and page formatting.
  • Use hyperlinks.
  • Insert and edit tables.
  • Define, understand and use frames.
  • Insert and edit forms.

Images
The Candidate will be able to:

  • Identify common image formats.
  • Understand image size issues.
  • Save and manipulate images.

The Law and Security
The Candidate will be able to:

  • Understand ownership rights of images, text and audio available on the web.
  • Identify the means by which viruses enter a computer system.
  • Identify steps to prevent viruses spreading.
  • Define and understand firewalls, cookies and digital certificates.
